in MEMORIAM
jOHN BARTSCHERER, N1GNV
We remember and honor John Bartscherer, better known to all as John Bee, N1GNV.
As the owner of Quicksilver Radio based in Meriden, CT, John was known not just for his knowledge and dedication to amateur radio, but for the connections he built within the ham radio community, a familiar face at hamfests up and down the east coast.
Whether you were a seasoned operator or just getting started, John always took the time to talk, help, and share his passion.
John played a vital role in the Nutmeg Hamfest, helping to organize and run the event that brings so many of us together each year. His efforts and spirit helped shape the hamfest into what it is today.
He will be deeply missed by friends, fellow operators, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
73, John
About the Nutmeg Hamfest
The Nutmeg Hamfest is Connecticut’s premier amateur radio gathering and the official ARRL Connecticut State Convention. Founded in 1992, the event takes its name from Connecticut’s nickname, “The Nutmeg State.”
The event has been rooted in central Connecticut and organized by local amateur radio enthusiasts. Three Amateur Radio Clubs: Middlesex Amateur Radio Society, Meriden Amateur Radio Club and Shoreline Amateur Radio Club formed the original Nutmeg Hamfest Alliance.
John Bartscherer, N1GNV, better known as “John Bee,” was the central figure in Nutmeg Hamfest’s history. He ran the Nutmeg Hamfest as sponsor of the Connecticut State Convention and served as the public contact and driving force behind the event for many years until he passed away in 2025. John Bee was well known to ham radio enthusiasts as the owner of Quicksilver Radio Products and was an active member of The Meriden Amateur Radio Club (MARC). Through his efforts, MARC was the sponsoring organization of Nutmeg Hamfest for many years. While Nutmeg Hamfest Alliance is separately incorporated, the leadership of Nutmeg Hamfest and many of the volunteers continue to be drawn from MARC’s membership.
Nutmeg Hamfest is Southern New England’s biggest and best hamfest, drawing several hundred attendees from across Connecticut and neighboring states for a day of seminars, vendors, free HT programming service, a VE licensing session, and an ARRL forum.
It remains one of the stalwart section-level conventions in the ARRL New England Division, carrying on a tradition of bringing amateur radio operators together each October in the heart of Connecticut.
